TVET is The Surest Way To Create Sustainable Employment – Expert

A gender advocate expert, has appealed to Ghanaians to accept and embrace Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a viable option to create sustainable employment for the Country’s teeming youth.

Mrs Patricia Boso, who advocates for increased participation of girls in TVET, said providing practical self-employable skills, was the way to go in guaranteeing the youth to become reliable tools to give of their best in nation building.

Pointing to research to buttress this position, she stated that TVET was what ruled the world today since current research had indicated that about 80 per cent of global jobs were located in the technical and vocational sector.

Mrs. Boso was speaking at a career fair organized by the Vocational Training for Females (VTF), a youth advocacy group, participated by students and trainees from some selected vocational and technical institutions as well as junior high schools pupils in Kumasi

Held under the theme “TVET a viable option for employment creation” the fair also brought together able professionals in the vocational and technical sector such as electrical engineers, tailors, fashion designers and those in the hospitality industry.

The professionals took turns to share their experiences with the participants to provide counseling and carrier guidance to enable them make informed future professional choices.

She recounted how some developed countries such as Japan, China, Australia and others, embarked on aggressive technical and vocational education and said, TVET was the only way to achieve sustainable employment and socio-economic stability in Ghana.

Mr Richard Asiedu-Larbi, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the VTF Programme, said his organization would continue to create awareness and encourage more youth to enroll unto technical and vocational programmes.

He said VTF had impacted more than 5,000 people in the last few years through community outreach programmes.

Mr Asiedu-Larbi commended the government’s efforts to bringing all technical and vocation institutions under the Ministry of Education to help in the coordination and allocation of resources to improve performance.
